We’ll be spending time in small group discussions about current mentor recruitment successes\, challenges\, and opportunities. There will be two small groups you can go between depending on your program’s needs: \nOne group will focus on recruiting mentors for e-mentoring\, which will be peer-led by Laura Leporati\, who is the Mentoring Coordinator for AMP! Metro Richmond and also a Technical Assistance Consultant with MENTOR Virginia. This school year is Laura’s second year of recruiting e-mentors for her mentoring program. \nOne group will focus on recruiting mentors for in-person mentoring\, which will be peer-led by David Crisafi\, the co-founder of L.A.U.N.C.H. for Life. We’ll be discussing how to build networks with families and programs. We’ll be joined by two guest speakers\, who will each discuss building networks from different perspectives. Jose Martinez from Casa Chirilagua will share information about how they build meaningful relationships with families and the broader community\, and how that enables them to provide culturally relevant mentoring to their youth. Rondell Davis from Another Level Youth & Family Services will talk about the strategy he has used to build relationships with other youth-serving programs to form stronger referral and resource networks for youth. \nPlease note that September’s coffee hour will be on the third Wednesday of the month rather than the second to accommodate the return to school. \nMENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing\, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. He has attended Northern Virginia Community College and currently attends George Mason University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in political science. Jose believes that positive influences help shape perspectives. He facilitates this by matching youth in the Chirilagua neighborhood to adult mentors while building relationships with families\, volunteers and schools. \nRondell Davis is the Chief Operating Officer at Another Level Youth & Family Services where he oversees the day-to-day administrative and operational functions. Rondell believes that the lives of young people can be impacted through counseling\, compassion\, and commitment. In addition to being COO he’s also a certified life coach that specializes in Overcoming Self-Sabotage. The panel will discuss the changing landscape of nonprofit fundraising and other critical topics in grant writing and resource development. We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour! \nRegistration for this meeting is required: register here. \nMeet Our Panelists: \nBianca Myrick is a native of Petersburg\, Virginia\, and the founder of Pretty Purposed\, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls ages 9-14 through mentorship and activities that promote their physical\, social\, and emotional development. As a middle grades educator\, Bianca has a passion for working with adolescents and saw a need in her community for a safe space where girls could grow and glow. As the founder\, she continues to work with her team to build organizational capacity and increase opportunities for girls. Drawing upon her own life experiences\, she knows that navigating through life as a woman can be challenging\, and she believes everyone could use a mentor. She is a 2010 graduate of the Department of Teaching and Learning at Virginia State University\, where she is currently an adjunct instructor empowering her freshmen students with tools to be successful in life. She has a masters degree in public administration from Virginia Commonwealth University\, and hopes to receive her certificate in nonprofit management soon through the Duke University/Cameron Foundation Learning Series. Bianca became a Technical Assistance Consultant for MENTOR Virginia in June\, 2020. \nSusan Hallett has worked in philanthropy in the Richmond Region for over 20 years. Currently\, she serves as Community Investment Consultant to the Bob and Anna Lou Schaberg Foundation. In this role\, Susan supports the Schaberg Foundation’s charitable gifts and grants programs and initiatives\, which focus on affordable and safe housing; stabilization and workforce development for vulnerable populations; services that enable children to become successful learners; successful systems to serve vulnerable populations; and capacity building resources that strengthen nonprofits and their leadership. Prior to her role with the Schaberg Foundation\, Susan worked for the Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond for 16 years\, where she oversaw their community grants\, scholarship and awards programs. Susan volunteers her time as a board member for Richmond Animal League and Avalon Recreation Association and is an instructor for the University of Richmond’s Institute on Philanthropy. She has her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology from Mary Washington College and her Graduate Certificate in Nonprofit Management from Virginia Commonwealth University.

We will be discussing Mentoring Strategies to Build on Youth Assets. \nDuring this Coffee Hour\, three organizations who are doing great work building on youth assets have agreed to share their stories and strategies with the field! \n\nTricia Howell and Yvonnia Bryant will be sharing C4K’s strategies for leveraging youth voice in their mentoring program (including how they have involved youth in presenting at the National Mentoring Summit and advocating at Capitol Hill Day). They will also discuss how focusing on youth voice has positively impacted and contributed to asset-building for youth in the program.\nLerone Joseph will be sharing about how the Mayor’s Youth Academy built and launched a youth council\, how they have supported youth activism and civic engagement through the youth council\, and how these efforts have positively impacted youth asset-building.\nAshley Short and Vaughn Garland will be sharing about how Art 180 has formed partnerships with various community groups and individuals in service of providing asset-building arts opportunities to young people.
