SUMMARY:Mentoring in the 'New Normal': Maximizing Participant Engagement in These Still-“COVIDy” Times
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar here. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic forced mentoring programs to rapidly virtualize and distance while grappling to meet changing needs in families and mentors — potentially resulting in significant changes to what programs and practices will look like moving forward. This workshop will reveal key insights from recent research and practice about how to maximize the engagement of youth\, families\, and mentors in these changing times. What communication modes\, engagement strategies\, and opportunities for voice and agency have programs found effective over the course of the pandemic? In particular\, what have we learned about the meaningful engagement of caregivers in the mentoring experience\, a recognized need for improvement in many mentoring efforts even before the pandemic? Moderator Dustianne North of the California Mentoring Partnership welcomes panelists Roger Jarjoura of the American Institutes for Research and Jamila Trimuel of the Ladies of Virtue\, to offer groundbreaking perspectives on these timely questions. \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Incorporating a Strengths-Based Mindset into Mentor Training and Program Policies
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar here. \nPracticing a strengths-based mindset in youth mentoring is critical to building on the potential inherent in all youth and families. Yet deficit-based ways of thinking are deeply ingrained habits supported by a negativity bias to which we are all susceptible. Good intentions alone will not ensure a mentoring organization incorporates a strengths-based mindset throughout programming.  This webinar will help mentoring practitioners establish and maintain a strengths-based approach throughout program design and implementation. Participants will leave this workshop with an appreciation for how a strengths-based approach supports youth development\, an understanding of how to practice it\, and a tool to utilize in your program.  Participants can expect to engage in 15 mins of optional interactive engagement. \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Healing Centered Restorative Engagement
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar here. \nHealing Centered Restorative Engagement prioritizes a strengths-based approach to working with youth while recognizing the harmful and problematic impacts of trauma and toxic stress on their social\, economic\, political\, physical\, mental\, emotional\, and spiritual well-being. HCRE draws on such practices as restorative practices as critical to establishing the foundation for relationship and healing; alternative administrative/organizational practices; healing-centered engagement; and related collaborative approaches. This webinar will share why this approach is critical to being proactive (rather than reactive) to individual trauma and why a healing focus is necessary to facilitate youth engagement. \nThis live webinar will be recorded and made available online. There will be live captioning available during the event. \n(Please note this webinar will take place on the fourth Thursday of the month) \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:From Crisis Into Capacity: Research and Practice Lessons from the Pandemic to Inform the E-Mentoring of Tomorrow
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar here. \nAt the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic\, e-mentoring went from an interesting sliver of the youth mentoring landscape to a must-have program capacity almost overnight in the face of social distancing mandates and closed program facilities. As the nation slowly emerges from this crisis-fueled plunge into virtual mentoring approaches\, new research is emerging about how this shift tested program capacities and the factors that made\, and continue to make\, shifts to e-mentoring feasible for service providers. \nThis webinar will review several new studies about pandemic era e-mentoring\, as well as other studies that shed light onto what it takes to design and implement quality e-mentoring services. Whether your program is keeping e-mentoring tech as an alternate space for matches to meet\, shifting entirely to permanent virtual relationships\, or still just thinking about whether e-mentoring could work in your program\, this webinar will share research findings about the factors that facilitate or hinder the success of e-mentoring\, both before and during the pandemic. We will also be reviewing a new capacity assessment tool and report that can provide all mentoring programs with key information to help them find the right e-mentoring solutions. \nPlease join Dr. Michelle Kaufman of Johns Hopkins University and moderator Mike Garringer of MENTOR for this illuminating discussion of what makes e-mentoring work and what we have learned from our field’s response to a world where mentors and youth couldn’t be together in quite the same ways could still be together\, albeit from a distance. \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Setting Expectations and Boundaries: Helping mentors approach the “toughest kids” in the best ways
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar here. \nMany times\, mentors sign up for a program because they’ve seen the videos–they’ve heard the amazing\, turnaround stories about how a mentor has helped change the entire trajectory of a “troubled kid’s” life. They may expect an immediate\, close bond with the mentee. They may anticipate gratitude on behalf of the family and constant enthusiasm from the youth. They’re excited about their financial ability to give their mentee all the things they never had growing up. Then\, real life happens. The mentee seems disrespectful or doesn’t always return the mentor’s calls. The family seems to be uncooperative. None of the goals that the mentor has set seem to be achieved\, and the mentor may begin to think: “Maybe this isn’t for me.” \nJoin us for discussion about how to approach mentors and mentees in setting realistic expectations and boundaries in the mentoring relationship\, taking into account topics such as implicit bias\, complex trauma\, and power-sharing in developmental relationships. \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Mentoring Youth Impacted by Substance Use & the Opioid Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Register here. \nWhile we are still learning about the wide and deep impacts of the pandemic\, increased isolation\, and major changes in how we all operate in school\, at home\, and in the community\, we know that the opioid crisis continues to affect youth and their families across the country. In addition\, substance use\, misuse\, and addiction of any kind are specific experiences that affect many of the young people we work with. In this webinar\, we’ll look at the ways in which substance use is often a trauma response for young people\, as well as trauma producing when it’s a challenge for youths’ families and loved ones. We’ll start with a presentation by Elizabeth Joy\, MBA\, MSW\, LISW-S\, LCDCIII\, BCC; and a moderated panel discussion with two OJJDP grantees who are integrating understanding of this issue into their mentoring models: Eluna and Road Recovery. Join the webinar on Tuesday\, September 28 from 2:00 – 3:30 PM EST. \nRegister here.
