SUMMARY:Community Q&A Hour: Program Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:Register here. \nTake a lunch break on Wednesday\, February 23rd and join us for Q&A time with expert mentoring program evaluator\, John Harris. Evaluation doesn’t have to be complicated\, and to prove it\, John will join us in his famous Hawaiian shirt to help demystify the process and answer questions like: \n–How can my program get started with program evaluation or take our evaluation to the next level?\n–How much should my program be budgeting for evaluation?\n–If my program doesn’t have a budget\, how can we still do evaluation? \nNot sure what evaluation questions you have? No problem. John can ask some helpful questions to get your program thinking about your evaluation plans. Regardless of how long you’ve been operating a mentoring program or how long you’ve been working on evaluation\, you will leave the meeting with helpful action steps your program can take to make progress on your evaluation goals. \nThis opportunity is free and open to any youth mentoring programs that have questions about how to get started with or enhance their program evaluation efforts. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:February Mid-day Mocha Hour: From "Mentoring" to "Critical Mentoring"
DESCRIPTION:Register for this conversation here. \nFebruary’s Coffee Hour has been remixed as a mid-day “pick me up!” Grab your cappuccino or latte\, and join MENTOR Virginia on Wednesday\, February 9 from 3:00–4:00 PM for Mid-day Mocha Hour. We’ll be discussing the mentoring field’s movement from “mentoring” to “critical mentoring.” Critical mentoring is defined as mentoring that: \n1. Fully considers race\, ethnicity\, gender\, class and sexuality when building the infrastructure for programs.\n2. Focuses on critical consciousness and transformation rather than assimilation and adaptation.\n3. Places emphasis on the whole community\, the whole protégé\, rather than just parts of the whole.\n4. Includes the needs of the community and the needs of the youth in the community (not about us without us).\n5. Promotes and supports mentor/protégé partnerships for community transformation. \nMENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing\, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour! \nRegister for this conversation here.

SUMMARY:National Mentoring Summit
DESCRIPTION:Register for the Summit here. \nThe National Mentoring Summit is the only national convening of youth mentoring professionals\, researchers\, MENTOR Affiliates\, philanthropic investors\, and government and civic leaders aimed at collectively strengthening and expanding quality mentoring relationships for young people across the country. The 2022 National Mentoring Summit will be held from Wednesday\, January 26th through Friday\, January 28th\, beginning with Capitol Hill Day before two full days of workshops and networking opportunities. The Summit will be a fully virtual event**.  Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from experts in the field\, network with peers\, and celebrate the power of relationships! \nThe 2022 National Mentoring Summit features more than 80 workshops that explore our theme: “Building Relationships\, Advancing the Movement.” This year’s workshops offer a versatile array of prevalent topics such as engaging youth voices to design virtual mentoring programs\, sustaining resilient mentor/mentee relationships\, relationship-centered schools\, fostering leaders and changemakers\, supporting and cultivating youth stories and narrative identity\, and mentoring youth with refugee status. Workshop sessions showcase exemplary program models\, collaborations\, research\, and innovations that have positive implications for strengthening the mentoring field. \n**UPDATE: The 2022 National Mentoring Summit is transitioning to a fully virtual event. \nAlthough we were originally very excited to host a hybrid conference\, the rapid spread of COVID-19 and the strain on our healthcare and travel industries have created a need to change course. Although we had hoped to see some of our speakers\, guests\, and young people in-person this year\, we know that our community will pivot gracefully\, leveraging the fully virtual format to grow attendance and engagement. We look forward to seeing you virtually on January 26-28 as we convene in celebration of National Mentoring Month\, our collective achievements\, and our vision for the future. Thank you for your patience as we work through this transition. We will continue to update MENTOR’s website with new information\, so stay tuned. \nRegister for the Summit here.

SUMMARY:Mental Health and Intersectionality: Gaps and Opportunities in Serving Youth
DESCRIPTION:Register for this webinar here. \nAs we’re hearing from mentoring programs and schools across the nation\, mental health is a number one concern for youth workers and teachers coming out of the pandemic. However\, mental health services and trainings are often geared to the public at large\, without specifically addressing the needs that particular sub-populations of youth may face. Awareness of language barriers\, dis/ability access\, and BIPOC microaggressions is only a start to ensuring that your program takes into account the intersectional identities of our youth. Join MENTOR Indiana\, Write Connections\, and the League for the Blind & Disabled on December 16th at 1 pm EST for a panel discussion exploring the intersectional gaps and opportunities in addressing youth’s mental health with the resources and approaches that they need to be successful. \nThis live webinar will be recorded and made available online. There will be live captioning available during the event. \nRegister for this webinar here.

SUMMARY:Community Q&A Hour: Program Evaluation
DESCRIPTION:Take a lunch break on Thursday\, December 2nd and join us for Q&A time with expert mentoring program evaluator\, John Harris. Evaluation doesn’t have to be complicated\, and to prove it\, John will join us in his famous Hawaiian shirt to help demystify the process and answer questions like: \n\n\nHow can my program get started with program evaluation or take our evaluation to the next level?\nHow much should my program be budgeting for evaluation?\nIf my program doesn’t have a budget\, how can we still do evaluation?\n\nNot sure what evaluation questions you have? \nTo get the link to drop into this lunch hour session\, register here. We will be providing this space every first Thursday of the month from 12 – 1 pm through the end of the year. Register once and you will be able to drop into any/all of the sessions. \nIf you have 20 minutes and want a quick overview of program evaluation for mentoring programs\, check out our July Community Coffee Hour recording\, featuring evaluation ideas and strategies from MENTOR’s Director of Research & Evaluation. \nAbout John Harris: \nJohn Harris specializes in program evaluation and survey development with a particular focus on assessing match characteristics. He has worked as an independent consultant supporting mentoring programs since 2000. He joined the MENTOR Virginia team as a Technical Assistance Consultant in 2016. John is the lead author of the Match Characteristics Questionnaire (MCQ) and the Youth Mentoring Survey (YMS)\, which are recommended by the National Mentoring Resource Center (NMRC) and used around the world. His publications have focused on mentoring relationship quality and include peer-reviewed journal articles\, toolkit contributions\, and the chapters\, “Assessing Mentoring Relationships\,” in both editions of the Handbook of Youth Mentoring (DuBois & Karcher\, Ed.s). In 2015\, John partnered with the School Volunteer Program (now EdConnect) in Australia to develop an evaluation toolkit that won a National Social Impact award.

SUMMARY:“Imma put the lil homies on next”: Mentoring\, mixtapes\, and hip-hop-informed approaches to collecting data
DESCRIPTION:Register here for this webinar. \nIn recent years\, many studies have attempted to explore the experiences of historically marginalized populations within higher education; especially Black men. While most studies expand the discourse about the Black male experience in higher education\, few incorporate arts-based methodologies that uniquely speak to the cultural sensibilities of Black men. This study remixes traditional qualitative methodologies through an arts-informed\, hip-hop pedagogical perspective by inviting participants to write and record original music in responding to a prompt related to the original research question. Together\, this curated collection of songs formed a mixtape\, which will be made available across multiple streaming platforms\, and introduces the counternarratives of Black male collegians. The resulting mixtape offers practical implications for revolutionizing the way educators’ mentor\, serve\, and connect with students by centering cultural knowledge as means of collecting data that characterizes the nuance of marginalized students’ experiences within (and beyond) the context of school. \nIn this presentation on Thursday\, November 18th from 1-2:15 pm\, national leaders from the youth-supporting sector will learn new strategies and approaches to developing innovative\, culturally responsive mentoring\, meaning-making\, and data collection within various youth-serving institutions. \nThis live webinar will be recorded and made available online. There will be live captioning available during the event. \nRegister here for this webinar.
