Leonard\, GPC\, RST is a Grant Professional Certified (GPC)\, Approved Trainer of the Grant Professionals Association\, and a Registered Scrum Trainer. \nDiane began her career as a Program Officer for a state-wide grantmaking organization and she continues to serve as a reviewer for a variety of grantmaking organizations. Since 2006\, when she formed DH Leonard Consulting\, Diane and her team have secured more than $118 million dollars in competitive grant awards and Diane has personally trained more than 80\,498 nonprofit professionals.  \nWhen not working with her team\, Diane can be found in the 1000 Islands\, out for a run\, or drinking a strong cup of coffee.

Young people themselves have a great deal to say about what they want from adults at these junctures\, and their thoughts can help to demystify the process of offering support. \nJoin mentoring expert Dustianne North (California Mentoring Partnership) for a moderated panel featuring Julia Pryce (Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work)\, mentoring scholar and co-developer of the Mentoring FAN model (in collaboration with Linda Gilkerson)\, which is based on observations of mentor-mentee dyads and provides a roadmap for adults in conversation with youth when difficult issues are at hand. We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour! \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Guest Speakers:\nKristin Lennox (she/her) is the Advocacy and Engagement Manager at Voices for Virginia’s Children. She is responsible for identifying advocacy opportunities; developing traditional\, digital\, and grassroots engagement and advocacy strategies; and mobilizing advocates to support policy priorities. Kristin has 5+ years experience providing community-based mental health services\, predominantly responding to crises or traumatic events with young people (2 – 17 years old). She has delivered global workshops and trainings on themes of trauma-informed care\, healing centered engagement\, and de-escalation. Kristin is passionate about increasing equity in community resources and mental health access for youth and families in Virginia. Kristin earned her Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a practicing Licensed Clinical Social Worker with certifications in Healing-Centered Engagement and as a Certified Trauma and Resilience Practitioner.   \nDr. Virginia Patterson is a passionate and youth centric advocate who has previously served as a teacher\, assistant principal\, principal\, and school division administrator. Throughout her years in public education\, Dr. Patterson developed mentoring programs that provided hundreds of young people with mentoring relationships that amplified their growth and potential. Before becoming MENTOR Virginia’s Executive Director in March 2022\, Dr. Patterson served as an AmeriCorps VISTA with MENTOR Virginia\, developing an inaugural Youth Advisory Council that engages youth to promote change and raise awareness about mentoring issue impacting them and their communities. Prior to coming to MENTOR Virginia\, Dr. Patterson spent 25 years with Chesterfield County Public Schools as a teacher\, assistant principal\, and principal. Additionally\, she served 7 years in Loudoun County Public Schools as a supervisor of principals\, a school improvement specialist\, and director of school administration. Dr. Patterson received a bachelor’s degree from Southern University in New Orleans\, a master’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University\, and a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech. Through Dr. Patterson’s strategic leadership\, MENTOR Virginia will continue to expand the mentoring movement to reach all of Virginia’s communities and ensure that all young people can access a trained mentor who empowers\, elevates\, and encourages them.

We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour! \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Guest Speakers:\nTovah Denaro (she/her) is the founder and lead consultant of Innovative Behavioral Consulting (IBC). She began this work in 2011 through her own experience in the classroom as a Special Education teacher for youth impacted with Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities. Through her years in the classroom\, she began to strategically focus on supporting youth\, ages 3 to 18\, who are historically minoritized; specifically\, BIPOC\, youth in Special Education\, who are or have been incarcerated\, and those that identify within the LGTBQ2IA+ community. Tovah founded IBC to ensure that any adult who supports youth has the skill and understanding to build intergenerational relationships and recognize the power that an adult/student connection has on keeping youth engaged and in school. Tovah’s work focuses on spreading Trauma Sensitive and Culturally Responsive Mental Health practices to school districts and Community Based Organizations across the states of Washington and California\, emphasizing social emotional learning and wellness systems for all. Tovah is currently a Doctoral Student through the University of Southern California in K-12 Urban Education.

We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour! \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Guest Speakers:\nDr. Temi Aregbesola was born and raised in Brooklyn\, NY. She now calls Clinton\, MD home. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Biology from Penn State University; a Masters of Public Health from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ (now known as Rutgers); and a Doctorate degree from Walden University. Her passion of servant leadership in her professional background spans over 15 years. Dr. Temi started her public health career as a health educator for underserved girls in the Bronx\, New York. This is where her love for health education and promotion blossomed and became more of a fixture in shaping her career. She carried this passion for working with the underserved\, and women specifically\, through to most of the work she did. Outside of work\, she was an avid public defender of women’s empowerment\, which filtered into Nigerian women’s empowerment. She is currently a Training and Prevention Specialist for the City of Alexandria. \nJo Hawke\, PhD. is the Lead Research and Evaluator at the Governor’s Prevention Partnership in Connecticut. She brings her expertise to The Partnership’s mentoring team assisting with the development of resources and training for mentors and mentoring providers\, including trauma-informed youth mentoring. With over 25 years of experience working in both nonprofit and university settings\, Dr. Hawke has a passion for work that improves the lives and well-being of at-risk youths and their families. She has been the Principal Investigator for several federal grants evaluating trauma-informed services and authored over 30 articles and publications on evidence-based approaches for youth and families impacted by psychological trauma and substance use in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.

We’ll be joined by Chloe Carter of Chesterfield County Youth Services and Amaris Ramsey from MENTOR National for a discussion Scaling Youth Leadership Opportunities. \nMENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing\, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour! \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Guest Speakers:\nChloe Carter is Chesterfield County Youth Services new Youth Community Engagement Specialist! She has worked in the non-profit sector for over 10 years focused on child development initiatives and community engagement programming. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Global Affairs with a focus on Inequalities and Responses from George Mason University and her Master’s in Public Administration with a professional certificate in Non-Profit Management from VCU. \nShe previously worked with VCU’s Performance Management Group as an Associate Consultant conducting assessments\, training\, and providing DEI education for a variety of state agencies. Chloe has also served as a Site Coordinator with Communities In Schools\, Chesterfield & Petersburg where she assessed school climates to determine school-wide and individual needs for students and families\, consulted with school and community-based teams to coordinate equity-focused support systems\, and provided community development opportunities. \nAmaris Ramey is the Grassroots Organizing Manager at MENTOR. In this role\, they support MENTOR’S policy and advocacy agenda by serving as the key organizer of grassroots and grasstops outreach. They are responsible for managing outreach efforts to mayors and governors\, organizing advocacy efforts around National Mentoring Month\, and working with the Policy Manager on key advocacy campaigns. \nPrior to joining the MENTOR team\, Amaris served as the Voter Engagement Coordinator at New American Pathways and has interned in the nonprofit sector as well as for a political campaign. \nThey have been recognized by The New York Times\, The Huffington Post\, and The Columbia College of Chicago for their nonfictional writing. Additionally\, they have received recognition from Scholastic\, Agnes Scott College\, and The Blood Orange Review. They were chosen as a participant in writing programs such as The Hurston Wright Foundation\, The NorthWood Writers Conference\, and Voices of Our Nation (VONA). Amaris is currently pursuing a graduate degree in Social Innovation from Agnes Scott College.

DESCRIPTION:Register for this training here.   \nAre you considering becoming a mentor or getting ready to be a mentor? Take the first step and attend one of MENTOR Virginia’s virtual New Mentor Trainings. Let our trainers prepare you to be the most effective mentor possible. By attending our virtual training\, you will learn what to expect from a mentor-mentee relationship and proven strategies for success. \nAt this session\, you will be introduced to: \n\nThe value of mentoring\nBoundaries of a mentoring relationship\nThe importance of a positive youth development approach\nStages of a mentoring relationship\, communication techniques\, and problem-solving strategies\nMentor/Mentee Activities\n\nMENTOR Virginia creates a lively atmosphere of learning and engages participants in interactive activities. Our goal is to have a minimum of 8 participants at each training session\, so consider bringing a friend\, colleague\, or sharing this training event with others interested in becoming a mentor. \nNote for Mentoring Programs: Mentoring programs can send up to three mentors from their program per month to one of our New Mentor Trainings at no cost.
