We’ll be joined by Nick Williams\, Associate Director of Student Engagement at VCU School of Business\, and Jacqueline Woodbridge\, Editorial and Media Relations Manager for the Office of Communications and Public Information in the City of Alexandria\, for a discussion on marketing\, social media\, and branding strategies for mentoring programs. \nMENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing\, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour. \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Guest Speakers:\nNick Williams is the current Assistant Director of Student Engagement at VCU’s School of Business. Through his role he also serves as the Director of the Business Mentoring Program at VCU where he connects current VCU students with faculty\, staff\, alumni and local business partners within a mentoring partnership. Nick is also a doctoral candidate in VCU’s Education Leadership Ed.D program and an adjunct professor teaching a freshman course called “Principles of Professional Development: Men of Color”. Having attended the University of Virginia (UVa) for his bachelors and masters degrees\, Nick aspires to become the president of a university. Outside of his work at VCU\, Nick is also an entrepreneur running four different businesses to include: Culinaire Creations\, Black Kings Connect Podcast\, Williams Xperience Marketing & Designs\, and Legacy Leaf Publishing. Nick also serves on the Alumni Association Board at his High School\, St. Stephens & St. Agnes School as well as serves on the Young Alumni Council for the UVa. \nJacqueline Woodbridge has worked in and around Virginia government since 2014\, getting her start in electoral campaigns. She has had the opportunity to work for members of the Virginia House of Delegates and Senate in both official and political roles\, most recently as the Communications Director for the Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus. She has also advised political campaigns and elected officials across the country on communications strategies and tactics through both paid and earned media. Before attending the University of North Georgia\, Jacqueline was a professional ballerina with Columbia City Ballet in South Carolina. In her free time\, she enjoys crafting\, baking\, riding bicycles\, and spending quality time with her family.

We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour. \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Guest Speaker:\nShariful Khan is a Skadden Fellow with the Students’ Civil Rights Project. In addition to litigating Title IX and VI cases with the SCRP team\, Shariful’s fellowship focuses on drawing out the link and overlap between racial harassment and discriminatory discipline in academic environments. \nAs a law student\, Shariful was heavily involved in the Veterans’ Legal Services Clinic. In addition to aiding individual veterans in their administrative discharge upgrade and disability benefit hearings\, he also represented a class of over a thousand U.S. veterans with less-than-Honorable discharges suing the Air Force for disability discrimination. \nShariful is the co-founder of “Access to Law School\,” now a clinical offering at Yale\, which helps low-income adults from New Haven apply for and get into law school. Before joining Public Justice\, Shariful worked at various civil rights and consumer protection organizations\, including the New York Legal Assistance Group’s Special Litigation Unit\, the Department of Justice\, and Gupta Wessler. \nShariful received his B.A. from The City College of New York and his J.D. from Yale Law School. After his fellowship\, he will clerk for Judge Robert E. Bacharach of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals and Judge Jed S. Rakoff of the Southern District of New York.

She brings 15 years of expertise in evaluations of community and school-based initiatives\, programs\, and services to promote youth development\, social emotional well-being\, and resilience\, and reduce delinquent behavior. She recently led the implementation evaluation of the three-year randomized controlled trial of Reach and Rise. Dr. Tanyu is also committed to helping practitioners build data and evaluation capacities through training and technical assistance. She is a Research Board member at the National Mentoring Resource Center where she provides evaluation technical assistance to program administrators and conducts resource reviews for the Center. For the past 2 years she has been mentoring high school students through Fairfax County Public Schools’ MentorWork program. \n  \nJennifer Kriebl\, MSW\, is a social worker and has worked in non-profits for 30 years.  She comes to mentoring with a background in supportive housing\, community organizing and mental health.  Her passion is working with communities as a facilitator and encouraging volunteerism and social responsibility from and within the community.  In her role as the National Director of Reach & Rise\, she ensures that Y’s across the country are providing quality mentoring to at-risk youth

SUMMARY:An Introduction to Critical Mentoring
DESCRIPTION:Register Here. \nCritical mentoring has been a concept that has grown in popularity and importance since the release of Dr. Torie Weiston-Serdan’s seminal book Critical Mentoring: A Practical Guide in 2017. This resource offered both a timely critique of the mentoring movement in America\, while also offering an example of how mentoring work could be reimagined to meet the growing needs of today’s youth and begin dismantling systems of oppression in communities\, rather than subtly reinforcing them. \nMENTOR is excited to work with Dr. Weiston-Serdan to further this vision with the release of the Critical Mentoring Supplement to the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring. This new resource marries the concepts and principles of critical mentoring with the standards of practice found in the Elements\, offering practitioners who want to shift to a critical mentoring framework with guidance on building and implementing those services with an eye on program quality and impact. This resource will be helpful to any program that wants to better meet the needs of marginalized youth and use mentoring to address issues of racial equity and social justice in their community. She served as a Board Member of Our Military Kids (2018-2021) and raised $20\,000+ hosting fundraisers and supported with capacity building efforts. Now\, she serves as a Board Member of Latinas Leading Tomorrow and raised $10\,000 to support the programming of underrepresented Latinas to empower them to become notable leaders. \nLisa Zajur has been an educator for 36 years holding a degree in education\, specializing in communications\, and curriculum design. Lisa Zajur\, is a certified cultural trainer on the Hispanic culture\, developed the Awaken the Spanish Within® Language and Cultural Training programs to help people understand the Hispanic culture\, while learning to speak Spanish in an easy\, fun\, and practical way. Clients such as U. S. Coast Guard\, Bank of America\, CapitalOne\, Bon Secours\, Richmond Public Schools\, and many other companies/organizations have connected with the growing Hispanic community through the energetic style of training offered in the Awaken the Spanish Within® courses.  \nLisa Zajur designed Passport to Education-Pasaporte a la Educación Bilingual Leadership Mentoring Programs offered through the Virginia Hispanic Foundation that empower Hispanic students with the educational and leadership tools necessary to complete high school\, continuing their higher education into the STEAM Education related majors -Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, Arts\, and Mathematics or skill sets certifications\, and encourages Hispanic parents to be engaged partners with their children’s schools\, while guiding them through the educational system in the U.S. Lisa received the Mentor of the Year Champion Award in 2021 for her work in implementing the Pasaporte a la Educación Bilingual Leadership Mentoring Programs with Hispanic elementary\, middle and high school students. Lisa Zajur owned and operated a successful Bilingual Child Care/Preschool for 11 years from 1991-2002.

DESCRIPTION:MENTOR’s Advocate Academy trains individuals to develop their personal policy and advocacy skills to become more civically engaged citizens and effective advocates for the issues they care about. The Academy is a free skill and professional development opportunity that is open to anyone interested in attending\, including youth. While the curriculum will be tailored to people in the mentoring/youth development space\, the skills and issues covered in these trainings can be applied universally to educate\, advocate\, and effectively influence policymaking. \nThe Academy will consist of three separate hour-long\, interactive virtual learning sessions that must be attended by the individual in its entirety in order to move on to the next course. After each session\, attendees will receive an optional supplemental reading and brief assignment that must be submitted in order to move on to the next course. \nGraduates of the program (those who complete all three courses) will receive a certificate\, MENTOR swag\, and other professional development accolades and fun rewards. \nFirst Course: Government 101\nThis session on October 12th at 1 pm will focus on the basics of government and civics in the United States. Having a mentor can make a huge difference for a young person\, including helping them achieve more in their academics and feel a sense of belonging in their school. \nWHAT: MENTOR Virginia is teaming up with 11 different mentoring programs in Central Virginia to virtually host a “Back to School Mentor Open House” this fall!  \nWHO: The open house is an opportunity for adults 18+ to learn more about becoming a mentor to a young person at a school near them. Our goal is to help match volunteer mentors with the more than 500 youth who are currently on waiting lists this school year. \nWHEN: The Back to School Mentor Open House will be held virtually on September 27\, 2022 starting at 6 pm. Participants are recommend to join at 6 pm\, but can join anytime between 6-8 pm. \nWHERE: Virtually on Zoom (sign up to receive the Zoom link) \nCOST: Free \nInterested community members will have the opportunity to learn more about each of the 11 mentoring programs at the event\, and have the chance to sign up for the one that is best fit for their interests\, geography\, and schedules. Participants will learn about opportunities to mentor youth in one-to-one as well as group settings\, with options for in-person and virtual mentoring. \nThe 11 programs that will be participating in the event include AMP! Metro Richmond\, Big Brothers Big Sisters\, CricketTogether\, Girls2Women-VA\, Girls for a Change\, Girls on the Run Greater Richmond\, Henrico HEROES\, Higher Achievement\, MEGA Mentors\, Partnership for the Future\, and the Take 5 Mentoring Program at Petersburg City Public Schools. The training will include interactive examples and time for live Q&A. \nRegister Here. \nMeet Our Panelists:\nChristina Haines\, In her role as Senior Director of Strategy and National Impact\, Christina is responsible for increasing access to mentorship for youth in foster care through the Silver Lining Mentoring Institute’s capacity-building initiatives. In previous roles\, Christina served as Associate Director for Policy and Institutional Outreach of the Harvard Global Health Institute\, an interdisciplinary research\, and education initiative. She also worked in growth capital for the nonprofit sector at venture philanthropy firm\, New Profit\, as the Manager of the Reimagine Learning Fund. Christina earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Marist College and a Master of Liberal Arts from Harvard with a concentration in government. \nSally Sanchez-Pena\, Sally is a Licensed Certified Social Worker (LCSW) and is passionate about centering the voices of  minoritized communities. In her role as a Program Coordinator at Silver Lining Mentoring\, Sally provides clinically informed\, individualized support for mentor and mentee matches and increases community engagement through hosting group events and youth workshops. Sally has previously worked in community based mental health rehabilitation and crisis management settings in Boston and NYC. She also conducted research on youth mentoring programs for Syrian refugees in Amman\, Jordan. Sally earned a BA in Sociology and International Studies from Boston College and a MSSW from Columbia University. \nMobile Burrell\, Mobile is an advocate for equity and fierce believer in the possibility of creating a world that everyone feels good calling home. As such\, Mobile has held a variety of professional roles working in service of and in collaboration with individuals who hold marginalized identities including black and brown families\, LGBTQ+ folks\, youth impacted by the foster care system\, and neurodiverse individuals of all ages. In their current role as Assistant Director of Technical Assistance and Institute Initiatives\, Mobile is responsible for ensuring Silver Lining Mentoring Institute clients and consultants have the tools they need for effective consultation. Through previous roles including Learn & Earn Program Coordinator\, work in Boston Public Schools Mobile\, and various roles with Wediko Children’s Services Mobile has gained several years of experience supporting youth\, staff and families through crises. Mobile earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Development and Psychology from Connecticut College; a Master of Social Work from Boston College with a concentration in Children\, Youth and Families; and has earned multiple certificates in their pursuit of lifelong learning.\n \nRegister Here.

Ryan is currently the Head of School at The Academy an independent private school serving families from uniquely challenging backgrounds and is the Founder of the Black Father Family Initiative an organization dedicated to creating space for Black fathers to find meaningful connections\, support\, and resources to promote the health\, well-being\, and success of their families. Trained as an educator\, he has a unique 10-year background in nonprofit management\, family and community engagement\, education leadership\, youth development\, and family stabilization that has led to the growth and establishment of several local\, state\, and national family well-being initiatives. Ryan has dedicated his professional life to supporting individuals\, communities\, and organizations in their efforts to build collective leadership\, establish community relevance\, and increase their organizing capacity to achieve greater social and societal outcomes. Ryan counts his greatest joy in life being the father of four amazing children\, and greatest blessing of his life being the husband to Tarsha Bell. \n  \nRobert Gray is a visionary\, businessman\, brand strategist and social entrepreneur with a passion for criminal justice reform and economic empowerment. He is the Executive Director and co-founder of The Uhuru Foundation As a native of Albemarle County\, VA who was born in Charlottesville\, he was able to experience firsthand both the opportunities and gaps that existed for the communities that raised him. As a result\, he fostered a strong determination to operationalize socio-economic mobility as a means for building generational wealth and knowledge\, especially among marginalized communities. His lifelong mission is to educate and empower all people socially\, politically\, and economically. Gray is currently on United Way’s Financial Resilience Task Force\, and was recently appointed to the Commonwealth’s Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Prevention. He also serves on the steering committee of the Charlottesville Black Male Achievement Initiative. He has over 10 years of experience working with high risk youth and two years of experience applying nationally recognized\, evidence-based Check and Connect program with targeted community of youth and their families in the City of Charlottesville ensuring students were attending\, engaging and investing in their education. Gray\, a first generation college graduate\, holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in Public Policy from Saint Augustine’s University. Hasty is a graduate of Virginia State University located in Petersburg\, Virginia\, and holds an MBA from Regent University located in Virginia Beach\, Virginia. Upon graduation from college\, J.T. went on to pursue a career in the banking industry at Townebank. Since joining Towne\, J.T. has held several positions to include teller\, banking officer\, management associate graduate\, and Assistant Manager of one of their local branches. After being in retail banking for 10 years\, J.T. went on to pursue his current career as a commercial lines risk advisor for Towne Insurance. In addition to retail banking and commercial insurance\, J.T. is also a licensed Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services by Towne Realty. Holding these positions awarded J.T. an opportunity to complete the Project Inclusion training offered by the United Way of South Hampton Roads\, which teaches young professionals the importance of serving on boards in their communities. SUMMARY:MENTOR’s Advocate Academy: Government 101
DESCRIPTION:MENTOR’s Advocate Academy trains individuals to develop their personal policy and advocacy skills to become more civically engaged citizens and effective advocates for the issues they care about. The Academy is a free skill and professional development opportunity that is open to anyone interested in attending\, including youth. While the curriculum will be tailored to people in the mentoring/youth development space\, the skills and issues covered in these trainings can be applied universally to educate\, advocate\, and effectively influence policymaking. \nThe Academy will consist of three separate hour-long\, interactive virtual learning sessions that must be attended by the individual in its entirety in order to move on to the next course. After each session\, attendees will receive an optional supplemental reading and brief assignment that must be submitted in order to move on to the next course. \nGraduates of the program (those who complete all three courses) will receive a certificate\, MENTOR swag\, and other professional development accolades and fun rewards. \nFirst Course: Government 101\nThis session on September 13th at 7 pm will focus on the basics of government and civics in the United States. It will cover how policy/laws are made at the local\, state\, and national level; the responsibilities of the executive\, legislative\, and judicial branches; what the government can do for you; systems of checks and balances; how to read/understand a bill; and definitions of key terms. \nRegister for Government 101
