From Crisis Into Capacity: Research and Practice Lessons from the Pandemic to Inform the E-Mentoring of Tomorrow

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, e-mentoring went from an interesting sliver of the youth mentoring landscape to a must-have program capacity almost overnight in the face of social distancing mandates and closed program facilities. As the nation slowly emerges from this crisis-fueled plunge into virtual mentoring approaches, new research is emerging about how this shift tested program capacities and the factors that made, and continue to make, shifts to e-mentoring feasible for service providers.

This webinar will review several new studies about pandemic era e-mentoring, as well as other studies that shed light onto what it takes to design and implement quality e-mentoring services. Whether your program is keeping e-mentoring tech as an alternate space for matches to meet, shifting entirely to permanent virtual relationships, or still just thinking about whether e-mentoring could work in your program, this webinar will share research findings about the factors that facilitate or hinder the success of e-mentoring, both before and during the pandemic. We will also be reviewing a new capacity assessment tool and report that can provide all mentoring programs with key information to help them find the right e-mentoring solutions.

Please join Dr. Michelle Kaufman of Johns Hopkins University and moderator Mike Garringer of MENTOR for this illuminating discussion of what makes e-mentoring work and what we have learned from our field’s response to a world where mentors and youth couldn’t be together in quite the same ways could still be together, albeit from a distance.
