September Community Coffee Hour: Strategies for Recruiting Black Men as Mentors

Grab your coffee or tea, and join your mentoring program peers and MENTOR Virginia on Wednesday, September 14th from 9:00 – 10:00 am for Community Coffee Hour. We’ll be joined by Ryan Bell from The Academy, Robert Gray from The Uhuru Foundation, and J.T. Hasty from Townebank for a discussion about strategies, barriers, and mindset shifts for recruiting Black men as mentors in mentoring programs.

MENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. Meet Our Guest Speakers:

Ryan Bell is on a mission to empower 10,000 Black fathers that create thriving Black children, families, and communities. Ryan is currently the Head of School at The Academy an independent private school serving families from uniquely challenging backgrounds and is the Founder of the Black Father Family Initiative an organization dedicated to creating space for Black fathers to find meaningful connections, support, and resources to promote the health, well-being, and success of their families. Trained as an educator, he has a unique 10-year background in nonprofit management, family and community engagement, education leadership, youth development, and family stabilization that has led to the growth and establishment of several local, state, and national family well-being initiatives. Ryan has dedicated his professional life to supporting individuals, communities, and organizations in their efforts to build collective leadership, establish community relevance, and increase their organizing capacity to achieve greater social and societal outcomes. Ryan counts his greatest joy in life being the father of four amazing children, and greatest blessing of his life being the husband to Tarsha Bell.

 

Robert Gray is a visionary, businessman, brand strategist and social entrepreneur with a passion for criminal justice reform and economic empowerment. He is the Executive Director and co-founder of The Uhuru Foundation As a native of Albemarle County, VA who was born in Charlottesville, he was able to experience firsthand both the opportunities and gaps that existed for the communities that raised him. As a result, he fostered a strong determination to operationalize socio-economic mobility as a means for building generational wealth and knowledge, especially among marginalized communities. His lifelong mission is to educate and empower all people socially, politically, and economically. Gray is currently on United Way’s Financial Resilience Task Force, and was recently appointed to the Commonwealth’s Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice and Prevention. He also serves on the steering committee of the Charlottesville Black Male Achievement Initiative. He has over 10 years of experience working with high risk youth and two years of experience applying nationally recognized, evidence-based Check and Connect program with targeted community of youth and their families in the City of Charlottesville ensuring students were attending, engaging and investing in their education. Gray, a first generation college graduate, holds a Bachelor’s of Arts in Political Science with a concentration in Public Policy from Saint Augustine’s University. J.T. Hasty is a graduate of Virginia State University located in Petersburg, Virginia, and holds an MBA from Regent University located in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Upon graduation from college, J.T. went on to pursue a career in the banking industry at Townebank. Since joining Towne, J.T. has held several positions to include teller, banking officer, management associate graduate, and Assistant Manager of one of their local branches. After being in retail banking for 10 years, J.T. went on to pursue his current career as a commercial lines risk advisor for Towne Insurance. In addition to retail banking and commercial insurance, J.T. is also a licensed Realtor with Berkshire Hathaway Home Services by Towne Realty. Holding these positions awarded J.T. an opportunity to complete the Project Inclusion training offered by the United Way of South Hampton Roads, which teaches young professionals the importance of serving on boards in their communities. As a result of this training, J.T. is now involved with the following organizations: Board Member, YMCA SHR Mount Trashmore; Board Member, Elder’s House; Board Member, Children’s Harbor; Board Member, Sub-Culture Inc.; Volunteer, Tidewater Arts Outreach; Treasurer, Urban League of Hampton Roads Young Professionals; Member, National African American Insurance Association; Co-Chair, Emerging Leaders DEI Townebank.
