With a new school year starting, it’s a great time to mentor youth at a school near you! Having a mentor can make a huge difference for a young person, including helping them achieve more in their academics and feel a sense of belonging in their school.

MENTOR Virginia is teaming up with 11 different mentoring programs in Central Virginia to virtually host a “Back to School Mentor Open House” this fall! The open house is an opportunity for adults 18+ to learn more about becoming a mentor to a young person at a school near them. Our goal is to help match volunteer mentors with the more than 500 youth who are currently on waiting lists this school year.

The Back to School Mentor Open House will be held virtually on September 27, 2022 starting at 6 pm. Interested community members will have the opportunity to learn more about each of the 11 mentoring programs at the event, and have the chance to sign up for the one that is best fit for their interests, geography, and schedules. Participants will learn about opportunities to mentor youth in one-to-one as well as group settings, with options for in-person and virtual mentoring.
Community members who attend this event will find opportunities to become a mentor to a youth at schools in Chesterfield, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico, Powhatan, and Prince George counties as well as Petersburg and Richmond cities. Learn more about the 11 participating programs below!

Participating Mentoring Programs

AMP! Metro Richmond

AMP! Metro Richmond is a one-to-one mentoring program operating in T.C. Boushall Middle School in Richmond’s Southside. Mentors and students meet weekly on Tuesdays at lunchtime, forming a relationship that suits the needs of the student. Some play games. Some share common interests in sports, the arts, computers, etc. The AMP! program is a simple and flexible concept based on the belief that everyone has strengths and those strengths can be accessed and reinforced through the gift of caring and listening.

Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters operates under the belief that inherent in every child is incredible potential and works to ignite, empower, and defend that potential through one-to-one mentorship. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, professionally supported matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through young adulthood. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of youth in our communities.

CricketTogether

CricketTogether connects each mentee to their personal eMentor who is guided to provide caring academic and social-emotional support through virtual correspondence. Our evidenced-based correspondence model and standards-aligned curriculum guides every eMentor in providing individualized support for their student. Each mentee selects short stories from Cricket’s library of award-winning content for the mentee and eMentor to read independently. Each mentee/eMentor corresponds asynchronously via online letters about the articles and stories they’ve read, and about important school and life issues.

Girls2Women-VA

Girls2Women-Virginia is a nonprofit formed in February of 2018 whose purpose is to empower one girl at a time to create a stronger and safer world. In our group mentoring organization, adult mentors sit in circles with teenage girls listening to them and supporting them through life’s challenges. Our girls come from diverse backgrounds and all bring their unique talents and gifts.

Girls for a Change

Girls For A Change is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit youth development organization aimed at empowering Black girls in Central Virginia to visualize their bright futures and potential through discovery, development, innovation, and social change in their communities. Our mission is to prepare Black girls for the world and the world for Black girls. The Immersion Lab’s goal is to strengthen the number of Black-owned female businesses in Richmond, Virginia. This youth entrepreneurship program provides youth with opportunities to benefit from mentoring, networking, workshops, and resources, while gaining access to market resources and business development services.

Girls on the Run Greater Richmond

Girls on the Run offers programs designed to inspire girls of all abilities to recognize and embrace their inner strength and make meaningful connections with others. Trained coaches use physical activity and dynamic discussions to build social, emotional and physical skills while encouraging healthy habits for life. In today’s unpredictable world, the strategies learned at Girls on the Run are more important than ever. Volunteers do not need to be a runner; you simply need to have a desire to support and encourage the next generation. Coaches receive all the tools and support they need and find that they get as much out of coaching as they give.

Henrico HEROES

The goal of Henrico H.E.R.O.E.S. is to promote quality mentoring programs for the youth in Henrico County Public Schools. We are passionate about providing nurturing one-to-one relationships and community support that will allow students to develop into their full potential and make informed, responsible decisions as members of their community. Our volunteers have opportunities to mentor students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels across more than 30 participating schools in the district.

Higher Achievement

Our Richmond Achievement Centers work closely with schools and community partners to provide critical academic and social-emotional tools to help our scholars thrive. Our scholars are driven and talented. We are committed to providing them with the resources, opportunities, and encouragement they deserve so that they can become the scientists and engineers, poets and journalists, artists and titans of industry that they dream of being. Our afterschool program for 6th-8th grade combines academic enrichment, mentoring, and social-emotional support for youth in Richmond at Binford Middle School, T.C. Boushall Middle School, and Thomas H. Henderson Middle School.

MEGA Mentors

We are a mentoring organization based in Chesterfield County, Virginia. We believe in equal education for all and that all children deserve an equal opportunity to share in America’s bounty through education and mentorship. We believe in working with public and private organizations to bring resources and attention to the needs of students to improve their success rate. We are committed to our mission of growing this movement and helping students become more successful in Chesterfield County Public Schools. We mentor and deliver life, social and leadership skills training in primarily group settings at the high school (9th, 10th and 11th) and middle school (6th, 7th and 8th) levels.

Partnership for the Future

Partnership for the Future operates the largest and most accomplished privately funded college preparatory/workforce development program in the Commonwealth of Virginia. GUIDES mentors assist PFF high school seniors with the college, financial aid, and scholarship application processes — processes that can sometimes seem overwhelming to students, especially those who are striving to be the first in their family to attend colleges. A mentor works with one or two students at a time, meeting on a monthly basis with each mentee over the course of seven months and communicating with each mentee weekly.

Take 5 Mentoring Program at Petersburg City Public Schools

The Take 5 Mentoring Program pairs central office staff members as well as volunteer mentors from the community in one-to-one relationships with high school seniors at Petersburg High School. The mentoring program welcomes all mentors who are dedicated to being a positive connection and inspiration for youth. A big part of a mentor’s role in the Take 5 Mentoring Program is to see hope and possibility in students even when they can’t see it YET in themselves! With the support of more volunteer mentors, the Take 5 Mentoring Program will seek to expand to serve students in 6th and 9th grades within the school district.

Please contact Sarah, our Director of Programs, at sarah@archive.mentorva.org with any questions about participating in this event.
