Critical mentoring has been a concept that has grown in popularity and importance since the release of Dr. Torie Weiston-Serdan’s seminal book Critical Mentoring: A Practical Guide in 2017. This resource offered both a timely critique of the mentoring movement in America, while also offering an example of how mentoring work could be reimagined to meet the growing needs of today’s youth and begin dismantling systems of oppression in communities, rather than subtly reinforcing them.

MENTOR is excited to work with Dr. Weiston-Serdan to further this vision with the release of the Critical Mentoring Supplement to the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring. This new resource marries the concepts and principles of critical mentoring with the standards of practice found in the Elements, offering practitioners who want to shift to a critical mentoring framework with guidance on building and implementing those services with an eye on program quality and impact. This resource will be helpful to any program that wants to better meet the needs of marginalized youth and use mentoring to address issues of racial equity and social justice in their community. Join us on Oct. 27 at 1pm as we debut this new resource and discuss the ways in which mentoring programs, and the youth they serve, can be true agents of change in communities.
