March Community Coffee Hour: Tackling Trauma Together

Grab your coffee or tea, and join your mentoring program peers and MENTOR Virginia on Wednesday, March 8 from 9:00 – 10:00 am for Community Coffee Hour. We’ll be joined by Charles Barrett of the National Association of School Psychologists, Jo Hawke of the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, and Ashley Williams of Well Collective for a discussion on crisis response among youth who have experienced traumatic events.

MENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. Meet Our Guest Speakers:

Charles A. Barrett, PhD, NCSP, a district-level administrator in Virginia, practiced as a school psychologist for 13 years at the elementary and secondary levels. He serves as an adjunct lecturer at several universities, where he is actively involved in the training and development of future school psychologists. Dr. Barrett was named School Psychologist of the Year by the Virginia Academy of School Psychologists and received the Rookie of the Year Award from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). His past leadership positions within NASP include co-chair of the Social Justice Task Force and African American Subcommittee, chair of the Multicultural Affairs and Social Justice Committees, and Virginia Delegate to the NASP Leadership Assembly. Dr. Barrett serves on the editorial boards of School Psychology Review and School Psychology. He is a frequent speaker and workshop presenter for educators, families, and community organizations. His website is www.charlesbarrett.org.

Jo Hawke, PhD. is the Lead Research and Evaluator at the Governor’s Prevention Partnership in Connecticut. She brings her expertise to The Partnership’s mentoring team assisting with the development of resources and training for mentors and mentoring providers, including trauma-informed youth mentoring. With over 25 years of experience working in both nonprofit and university settings, Dr. Hawke has a passion for work that improves the lives and well-being of at-risk youths and their families. She has been the Principal Investigator for several federal grants evaluating trauma-informed services and authored over 30 articles and publications on evidence-based approaches for youth and families impacted by psychological trauma and substance use in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems.

Ashley Williams, MS, C-IAYT is a Mind-Body Therapist and Wellness Educator with 12 years’ experience in the fields of education, behavioral and mental health and community programming in Richmond, VA.  As a builder and weaver, she bridges mindfulness, diversity, wellness and inclusion on micro and macro-levels to achieve equitable, socially stable and conscious spaces for individual and collective care. She is the Founder of BareSOUL Yoga & Wellness, a community-based organization initially created to offer accessible yoga offerings, and Mindful on Life, a curriculum-based program dedicated to transforming community through the practice of mindful-based restorative education. As an advocate for diverse representation, accessible self-care and overall well-being, she has strategically built community-centered yoga and mindfulness programs in schools, health systems, government agencies, faith-based organizations and businesses. Ashley continues to create spaces that offer mindful-based living practices to encourage self-exploration, awareness, authenticity and build community for the collective good. Her current venture is the Well Collective, a community space for conscious well-being that centers intergenerational healing modalities, contemplative practices, wellness workshops, and herbal apothecary located in historic Shockoe Bottom, Richmond, Va.
