October Community Coffee Hour: Mentoring Latinx Youth in a Culturally Relevant Way

Grab your coffee or tea, and join your mentoring program peers and MENTOR Virginia on Wednesday, October 26 from 9:00 – 10:00 am for Community Coffee Hour. We’ll be joined by Rebecca Singhavong from Latinas Leading Tomorrow and Lisa Zajur from the Virginia Hispanic Foundation to discuss culturally relevant mentoring practices for Latinx youth.

MENTOR Virginia will virtually host Community Coffee Hour every 2nd Wednesday of the month with mentoring program staff to create space for peer-to-peer learning and resource sharing, and to address issues you and your organization might be facing during the pandemic and beyond. We hope to see you at an upcoming Community Coffee Hour!

Meet Our Guest Speakers:

Rebecca Singhavong serves as Vice President, Corporate Controller of SMX, LLC owned by Ocean Sounds Partner.  In this role, Singhavong has overall responsibility for the controllership and financial reporting activities for SMX, LLC. She has 15+ years of a proven track record of developing financial controls, transforming business operations to drive growth, system optimization and staff development.

A Certified Public Accountant, Singhavong holds a bachelor’s degree from University of Maryland University College in Accounting and MBA in Executive Leadership from James Madison University.

Singhavong believes in the power of paying it forward and supports the community. She served as a Board Member of Our Military Kids (2018-2021) and raised $20,000+ hosting fundraisers and supported with capacity building efforts. Now, she serves as a Board Member of Latinas Leading Tomorrow and raised $10,000 to support the programming of underrepresented Latinas to empower them to become notable leaders.

Lisa Zajur has been an educator for 36 years holding a degree in education, specializing in communications, and curriculum design. Lisa Zajur, is a certified cultural trainer on the Hispanic culture, developed the Awaken the Spanish Within® Language and Cultural Training programs to help people understand the Hispanic culture, while learning to speak Spanish in an easy, fun, and practical way. Clients such as U. S. Coast Guard, Bank of America, CapitalOne, Bon Secours, Richmond Public Schools, and many other companies/organizations have connected with the growing Hispanic community through the energetic style of training offered in the Awaken the Spanish Within® courses. 

Lisa Zajur designed Passport to Education-Pasaporte a la Educación Bilingual Leadership Mentoring Programs offered through the Virginia Hispanic Foundation that empower Hispanic students with the educational and leadership tools necessary to complete high school, continuing their higher education into the STEAM Education related majors -Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics or skill sets certifications, and encourages Hispanic parents to be engaged partners with their children’s schools, while guiding them through the educational system in the U.S. Lisa received the Mentor of the Year Champion Award in 2021 for her work in implementing the Pasaporte a la Educación Bilingual Leadership Mentoring Programs with Hispanic elementary, middle and high school students. Lisa Zajur owned and operated a successful Bilingual Child Care/Preschool for 11 years from 1991-2002.
