In 2022, MENTOR Virginia and Equivolve Consulting worked together to survey youth mentoring programs across the state of Virginia to capture information about the service providers offering mentoring relationships and activities to youth. The objective of collecting this information was to capture data towards the critical goals of advocating for increased public and private investment in mentoring, helping to identify gaps in services, and developing new training and tools that can support programs across Virginia. There were 56 mentoring organizations that completed this survey, which captured 130 distinct mentoring programs.
Of the 56 respondents only 45 represented organizations ran active mentoring programs in 2021. The data below is only representative of the 45 mentoring programs that completed the survey, and is not intended to be considered a comprehensive report on all the mentoring programs operating in Virginia.

There are also a considerable number of mentoring programs that are utilizing structures like peer mentoring, team mentoring, and therapeutic mentoring.

Who are the Mentoring Programs Designed to Serve?
Mentoring organizations that completed the survey were asked to share whether there are specific communities or groups that their programs are designed to serve. While many respondents shared that they do serve specific communities, 8 respondents shared that they do not have specifications around who can be connected to a mentor.
What Are the Demographics of the Youth Being Served by Mentoring Programs?
The 45 survey respondents served a total of 13,765 youth in 2021. Survey respondents served an average of 306 youth per organization. Seven providers reported serving 20 or fewer youth; 26 reported serving between 21 and 200 youth or fewer; and 10 reporting serving over 200 youth.
According to the survey results, very few of the 45 active mentoring programs that completed the survey serve youth who are younger than Kindergarten age, with a majority of programs serving middle school and high school youth. A substantial number of programs who completed the survey work with young adults who are over the age of 18.
Programs were asked to identify the race and ethnicity demographics of the youth they worked with in 2021. The largest demographic group that was served by mentoring programs that completed the survey were Black, Afro-Caribbean, and African American youth. The second largest demographic group that benefitted from these mentoring programs were Latino or Hispanic youth who represent a quarter of youth served by these programs in 2021.

How Often are Youth Meeting with a Mentor?
Of the mentoring programs that completed the survey, the vast majority have their matches meeting each other for 1-2 hours per week, or 4-8 hours per month. The second most common dosage was slightly lower dosage than 1-2 hours per week, at 3 hours or less per month. A small handful of programs are having their matches meet more than 12 hours per month, which would be considered a more intensive dosage of mentoring than the average program.
