Join MENTOR Virginia for a free 8-part interactive workshop series on the Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring, which are the research-informed and practitioner-approved standards for creating and sustaining quality youth mentoring programs and impactful mentoring relationships. Workshops will run from July 2021 through February 2022. Register for one or all eight below!
Part 1: Designing & Planning Mentoring Programs
Friday, July 16 | 10 – 11:30 am
Launching and sustaining an impactful youth mentoring program requires building a strong foundation. To do this, programs will need to build an advisory committee, conduct a needs assessment, determine mission, create a logic model and budget, develop policies/procedures, build awareness, and create a staffing model.
Part 2: Recruiting Mentors & Mentees
Friday, July 30 | 10 – 11:30 am
Whether you’re building a brand new mentoring program or have been operating for years, it can become challenging to recruit enough mentors to meet the need in your community, or to recruit mentors who are a great fit with your program’s goals and values. Participants will learn about recruitment strategies, messaging, and how to develop a targeted recruitment plan.
Part 3: Screening Mentors & Mentees
Friday, August 20 | 10 – 11:30 am
Mentors need to be screened for safety, and mentors and mentees both need to be screened for commitment and to ensure a good fit for the program. Through interactive activities, participants will learn how to use key tools throughout the screening process to ensure consistent and safe implementation.
Part 4: Training Mentors & Mentees
Friday, September 17 | 10 – 11:30 am
Training mentors, mentees, and parents/guardians ensures they have the basic knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to build and support an effective mentoring relationship. Participants will learn about the key topics needed for effective preparation, and available resources to help with training development.
Part 5: Making Effective Mentor & Mentee Matches
Friday, October 22 | 10 – 11:30 am
To increase the odds that a mentoring relationship will endure and be effective, it needs a strong foundation. This begins with a good match, which stems from a high-quality matching process that includes program-specific criteria and takes into account the characteristics of each mentor and mentee. Participants will learn about the innovative strategies and tools that can help programs make matches that empower youth.
Part 6: Monitoring & Supporting Matches
Friday, November 19 | 10 – 11:30 am
Providing ongoing monitoring and support to youth and adults is often the most critical—yet overlooked—aspect of managing a high-quality youth mentoring program. Ongoing support involves monthly communication with all parties (mentors, mentees, and mentees’ families) to support the relationship-development process. To effectively support matches, staff members must be trained to develop cultural competency and supportive communication skills so they can navigate across cultures and contexts.
Part 7: Closing Mentor/Mentee Matches
Friday, January 21 | 10 – 11:30 am
Closure, the process of transitioning or ending relationships, is a natural part of the mentoring life cycle. Unfortunately, although mentoring relationships are often initiated with care, many do not receive the support they need to endure common pitfalls and do not transition in ways that affirm participants. Participants will learn about providing closure training to participants and strategies for facilitating healthy closure.
Part 8: Evaluating Mentoring Programs
Friday, February 18| 10 – 11:30 am
Evaluation is an essential tool for building effective mentoring programs that truly make a difference. Evaluation is not a one-time activity—it is a system used to collect information that will help improve your program over time. Participants will learn about different types of program evaluation, measurement tools, and how to link program outcomes with program design.
