At MENTOR Virginia, we love the month of January because it’s National Mentoring Month, a celebration of the power of youth mentoring that is celebrated around the United States. There are lots of ways to get involved in and celebrate National Mentoring Month. Here are some suggestions to get started.
Attend a New Mentor Training
A great way to celebrate National Mentoring Month is to attend one of our public New Mentor Trainings. All of our public trainings cost $30 per person and are hosted in our Richmond office. This 2.5 hour training covers topics including: appropriate mentor roles, communication, boundary-setting, relationship-building techniques, and positive youth development practices. Our public trainings are open to anyone who is interested in learning more about youth mentoring, and is ideal for folks who are beginning a new mentoring relationship. To learn more, visit our training page. Our January training dates include:

Share Your Story on Social Media
Another great way to celebrate National Mentoring Month is to share your story about being mentored or being a mentor on social media. There are several days in January that are designated for social media story-telling using the hashtags #MentoringMonth and #MentorIRL. Don’t forget to tag us too on Facebook (@vamentoring)! Here’s the calendar line-up:

Donate to MENTOR Virginia
National Mentoring Month is a time to reflect on the caring adults that made a difference in our lives. Because of our amazing community of supporters–all of whom understand the power of mentoring–MENTOR Virginia has been able to lead and expand the mentoring movement in Virginia, ensuring more young people have access to the mentors who will help them grow and thrive. Consider honoring the mentors in your life by helping us reach our goal of training 1,800 new mentors in 2020. Donate here.
Become a Mentor
One of the most impactful things you can do this National Mentoring Month is volunteer as a mentor with one of the over 100 mentoring programs in operation across Virginia. The best way to find a program to volunteer with is to use the Mentoring Connector search tool, which helps you find and contact mentoring programs local to you. You can also contact Sarah at sarah@archive.mentorva.org for help locating a program.
